Whether you are building a metro backbone, expanding long-haul capacity, or interconnecting data centers, we provide flexible and cost-effective optical networking solutions built for performance and long-term scalability.
What is WDM & OTN?
WDM stands for Wavelength Division Multiplexing. It is a fiber optic technology that enables the simultaneous transmission of multiple data signals over a single optical fiber using different wavelengths (colors) of light. Rather than using multiple fibers for increased bandwidth, WDM enables the combination of many signals onto a pair of fibers, resulting in a substantial increase in capacity with lower costs.
There are two main varieties:
CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing): This is suitable for short to medium range transmission with fewer wavelength signals.
DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing): This is suitable for high-capacity, long-haul transmission with much denser signal spacing and many more wavelength signals.
Core Product Types in the WDM OTN Category
We provide a comprehensive ecosystem of products that work together to build scalable optical networks.
WDM OTN Platforms
Our managed OTN chassis platforms form the foundation of scalable optical transport networks. Available in compact 1U and 2U rackmount configurations, these modular systems support:
- CWDM & DWDM service cards
- EDFA optical amplifiers
- OLPS (Optical Line Protection Systems)
- OTAP (Optical Tap modules)
- Redundant AC/DC power supplies
- SNMP, CLI, and Web-based management
These platforms are ideal for:
- Metro networks
- Data center interconnect (DCI)
- Long-haul backbone deployments
- Enterprise core networks
With support for high channel counts and flexible configurations, our platforms enable seamless expansion from 10G to 100G, 200G, and 400G services per wavelength.
Muxponder / Transponder Cards
Muxponder and transponder modules play a critical role in maximizing wavelength efficiency.
These modules:
- Aggregate multiple lower-speed client signals
- Convert electrical signals to WDM optical wavelengths
- Support coherent transmission for extended reach
For example, high-capacity muxponders can combine dual 100G client interfaces onto a single 200G DWDM wavelength. This reduces fiber usage while increasing throughput — a key advantage for service providers optimizing backbone capacity.
Optical Line Protection Devices
Network reliability is critical in telecom and enterprise environments. ArkOptics Optical Line Protection (OLP) systems provide automatic switching between primary and backup fiber paths.
Key benefits:
- 1+1 or 1:1 protection switching
- Fast fault detection and switchover
- Increased network uptime
- Business continuity assurance
OLP solutions are particularly important in mission-critical applications such as financial networks, healthcare systems, government infrastructure, and ISP backbone links.
Passive WDM Components
Passive WDM devices are the backbone of flexible wavelength routing. We provide a full range of DWDM Dual Fiber and CWDM Dual Fiber mux/demux systems and OADM modules.
DWDM Dual Fiber Solutions
High-density options include:
- 48 Channel DWDM Mux Demux – High-capacity metro and long-haul applications
- 40 Channel DWDM Mux Demux – Scalable backbone deployments
- 32 Channel DWDM Mux Demux – Balanced capacity and cost
- 16 Channel DWDM Mux Demux – Ideal for medium-capacity links
- 8 Channel DWDM Mux Demux – Entry-level dense WDM deployments
These systems support tight channel spacing (50GHz / 100GHz grids) and enable large-scale bandwidth expansion over existing fiber infrastructure.
CWDM Dual Fiber Solutions
For cost-effective metro and access networks:
- 18 Channel CWDM Mux Demux – Maximum CWDM spectrum utilization
- 16 Channel CWDM Mux Demux – Standard metro aggregation
- 8 Channel CWDM Mux Demux – Compact enterprise deployments
CWDM is ideal for short to medium distances where cost efficiency is a priority and ultra-dense spacing is not required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. What is the difference between OTN and WDM?
WDM is the technology that allows multiple wavelengths to be transmitted over a single fiber. OTN is a transport framework that enhances WDM by adding management, monitoring, and error correction capabilities. WDM increases capacity; OTN improves reliability and control.
Q.What are the 4 types of multiplexing?
The four common multiplexing types are:
- Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)
- Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM)
- Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)
- Code Division Multiplexing (CDM)
WDM is specifically used in fiber-optic communication systems.
Q. How many channels can DWDM support?
DWDM can support 8, 16, 32, 40, 48, 64, or even 96 channels, depending on channel spacing and system design. High-density 48 Channel DWDM Mux Demux systems greatly increase fiber capacity without having to build new fiber infrastructure.
Q. What is the purpose of WDM?
The main purpose of WDM is to increase fiber bandwidth by transmitting multiple data streams simultaneously over a pair of fibers, thereby cutting infrastructure costs while maximizing network performance.
Q. How is WDM used in telecommunications?
In telecom networks, WDM is used for:
- Metro and long-haul backbone networks
- Data center interconnect (DCI)
- Enterprise WAN connectivity
- ISP service delivery
- High-speed cloud connectivity
It enables carriers to quickly increase capacity without having to build new fiber.
