What exactly is a loopback attenuator?

loopback attenuator is a device used to test the performance and functionality of fiber optic networks, which providing network operators with an essential tool for testing and troubleshooting fiber optic networks.
Specifically, it enables network engineers and technicians to test the transmiter and receiver components of network equipment by simulating a full circuit loopback. This is a critical part of the testing process, as it allows for accurate measurements of insertion and return loss – two key metrics that affect the overall performance of a fiber optic network.
Besides, loopback attenuator is an incredibly useful tool for troubleshooting fiber optic networks. When a network experiences performance issues, it can be tough to pinpoint the root cause. However, with loopback attenuator, network engineers can systematically test each component of the network, isolating any issues and addressing them in a structured manner. This can significantly reduce the time and resources required to resolve network issues, and ultimately result in a more reliable and high-performing network.
Arkoptics makes loopback attenautors with MTP® MPO, LC and SC connectors, both single mode and multimode loopback attenuators are available.

Attenuators for optical transceivers

If the received optical power of the optical transceiver module is too strong, it will cause packet loss and bit errors when transmitting data, especially for long-distance transmission modules of 40km, 80km, and 120km. At this time, an optical attenuator is required to reduce the received optical power to avoid overloading the receiver.

5dB fiber attenuator
1000BASE-EX SFP for long-reach single-mode fibers

The 1000BASE-EX SFP operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to 40km in length. A 5dB inline optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable and the receiving port on the SFP at each end of the link for back-to-back connectivity.

10dB fiber attenuator
1000BASE-ZX SFP for long-reach single-mode fibers

The 1000BASE-ZX SFP operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to approximately 70km in length. The SFP provides an optical link budget of 21dB, but the precise link span length depends on multiple factors such as fiber quality, number of splices, and connectors.
When shorter distances of Single-Mode Fiber (SMF) are used, it might be necessary to insert an inline optical attenuator in the link to avoid overloading the receiver. A 10dB inline optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable plant and the receiving port on the SFP at each end of the link whenever the fiber-optic cable span loss is less than 8dB.

What is a 40CH DWDM MUX?

DWDM, the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing, is a technique of transmitting multiple signals on individual wavelengths of light simultaneously. The MUX, or multiplexer, is a device that enables signal transmission and reception by combining multiple wavelengths onto one optical fiber. The 40CH DWDM MUX is a specifically designed DWDM multiplexer that operates on a 40-channel wavelength.

Can 40CH DWDM Mux Demux be customized with Expansion port?

Yes, Arkoptics can makes 40 Channel DWDM Mux Demux with Expansion port. This EXP port can also work with CWDM wavelength if connected with CWDM Mux Demux.
